Description

The Runes: A Pandemic Journey (2024) is Kari Tauring’s deep dive into the 16 Runes of the Younger Futhark during the Global Pandemic and uprisings for justice in Minneapolis. She describes it as a “sad and lonely group of letters” that she actively avoided for years. But then it was sad and lonely times and this group of runes came up to meet Tauring during the same kinds of challenges her ancient forebears were facing around 700 CE when the runes were changing. Climate change, death through war, famine, and disease, globalization and the import of new ideas, products, and people into Norway through viking excursions, and the pressures of a new spiritual ideology and mythos – Christianity.

In 2020, Tauring taught an on-line course exploring these intersections as well as the way these runes can be made with one body. This is the “manual” her students have been asking for! It is a complete guide to Moving Into the Younger Futhark solo, or with your own study group. Embodiment exercises start and finish each chapter. Between them are links to animals and myths suggested by Graham Butcher in his guide to Hafskjold Family Stav practice and quotes to the Icelandic and Norwegian rune poems that serve to tie it all together.
